Monica Bonvicini is Roland prizewinner 2015

The Roland Prize 2015 for art in public space is awarded to the artist Monica Bonvincini, who was born in Venice and now lives and works in Berlin.

The jury justify their decision as follows:

“Awarding the Roland Prize to Monica Bonvicini, the jury honors an artwork, which combines a high level of formal precision with fundamental questions about social conflicts and social tension in open space and at the same time is so intelligent and straightforward that one can neither avoid nor ignore it. Especially in their community based aspects, the artworks by Monica Bonvicini create an unpleasant mixture between beauty and violence, intimacy and aggression, temptation and rape. In an excellent way, the artist realizes the prize’s aspiration to “explore new spheres of action and thinking for the art in public space” (excerpt from the jury’s statement of November 19th, 2015)
